Reinterpreting memory

The project proposes the transformation of a former guest house used by Nicolae Ceaușescu in Timișoara into a contemporary hotel. The existing building reflects the architectural language of Romania’s communist period—a style whose cultural and architectural value remains open to debate. Rather than erasing this identity, the concept seeks to preserve and reinterpret it.

Although the proposal adds a new level to the existing structure, the overall form remains rooted in the original architectural principle. Elements of the initial façade are retained, while others are carefully reinterpreted, allowing the building’s original character to remain present within its transformation.

Inside, the former lobby is reimagined as a lounge while preserving an important fragment of the building’s history. A large artistic mosaic that once defined the wall was carefully documented and reproduced on glass, transforming it into a contemporary element while retaining its original visual identity.

The hotel was ultimately not developed due to changes in the client’s business strategy. Today, alternative functions are being explored for the building, including the possibility of transforming it into a cultural hub—allowing its architectural and historical narrative to continue in a new form.

Designed to be remembered.
